328184-398126-thumbnail.jpgThe majority of Brookwood Asylum was demolished to make way for houses in the mid 1990’s now only admin, the recreation hall and 1 or 2 ward blocks are left standing and have been fully converted into very expensive small apartments, the land which surrounds these old buildings has been turned into a housing estate called Brookwood Manor, row upon row of small characterless boxy houses that sell for far too much money! 328184-398136-thumbnail.jpg

None of the developers quite knew what to do with the chapel which was at the edge of the hospital, so along with the mortuary it was boarded up and left.

328184-398127-thumbnail.jpgIt stayed that way for quite a few years with no-one quite knowing what to do with it until a group of Buddhists bought both the chapel and the mortuary building for conversion into a temple and monks residence.

Quite by chance we drove past one day and saw builders working on the outside of the structure and decided to chance it and ask for a look-see. All of the builders and workers on site were volunteers dedicated to making the now 328184-398141-thumbnail.jpgex-chapel an excellent meditation centre.

They were very friendly and more than happy to show us around pointing out both original features and the improvements that they had made inside. It took 3 people working 10 hour days to sand and polish the parquet flooring to the shine it is now.

Anyone who has seen the inside of Cane Hill chapel will see a strong architectural resemblance to this one, with the 2 colour bricks the ornate arches and the alter was the same as the Cane Hill one too.

Although most of the rest of the asylum long gone or converted it was nice to see the that the chapel will be saved.
