Grain Tower Battery

Knowing that the tower was only accessible at low tide due to it being in the middle of a causeway we chanced our arm a little and drove out there hoping that the tide would be out, more by luck than judgement we were ok!

Originally built in 1855 and roughly the same as a Martello tower; Grain Tower Battery was originally built out of granite bricks with a brick interior and housed two cannons the mounting for which have long since been removed due to various remodelling.

In 1910 two quick fire guns replaced the cannons and a a crew room was added to the roof also at this time a 330095-337150-thumbnail.jpgheavy chain was wrapped around the base as it was discovered that if struck by enemy fire this part would be liable to be under great stress and possibly split!

330095-337170-thumbnail.jpgThe guns on the site were replaced in 1940 with the advent of WWII and an ammunition lift was put in to lift shells from the store to the guns, this can still be seen. Also a Battery observation post was added around this time and is the slightly strange series if small rooms that can be seen on top of the round tower.

The largest addition to the original tower was the barrack block which had a cook house dining hall and sleeping quarters it was connected to the original structure with 2 concrete walkways.330095-337163-thumbnail.jpg

As far as I can work out it was decommissioned in the early 1950's and is now a national monument and is currently up for sale at a whopping £700,000!
