328184-313898-thumbnail.jpgThe Hospital started out as a certified institution converted from aircraft hangers from WWI. The male patients that were there assisted in the building of the villa hospital that later became known as Harperbury.

The design of the villas catered for a wide range of learning disabilities and severe epileptics. The villas are designed in 3 loops,1 loop of villas for male patients one for female and the last one at the top of the complex for children. 328184-313889-thumbnail.jpgThe children's part also contained a swimming pool and a school.

Admin, the Main Hall boiler house and the staff housing block are still in use by various NHS departments.

It is always a little strange walking around a half live site you always expect the “Oi! What are you doing” at any time. Being mid afternoon on a Sunday we did not run into anyone in the entire time we were there.

328184-313896-thumbnail.jpgThe children's ward makes for a very surreal explore. The school was probably the strangest in one classroom was a brightly coloured rainbow above the blackboard while in the classroom next door was a padded cupboard which is very strange and just a little disturbing.

It is a shame that the NHS have literally closed the wards at the top of the complex and just forgotten about them, no boarding of broken windows no care of any kind to them they are just a set of buildings that they no longer need and have outlived their usefulness.
