Kingston Sorting Office

Kingston sorting office now stands at the edge of a busy car park in the town centre.

It was originally built as an add on building to Kingston ’s central post office in 1907. It is an arts and crafts style building which can be clearly seen by the intricate iron railings around the perimeter. It housed one of 330095-229894-thumbnail.jpgthe first dedicated telephone exchanges.

Over time the usage of the building changed and it became a sorting office for the area. When the post office reviewed its buildings in the late 1990’s it was 330095-229908-thumbnail.jpgfound that the need for such a large building in Kingston ’s town centre was a waste of resources, services were transferred elsewhere and the building was closed.

Both the central Post Office and the Sorting office are listed buildings although it seems that the building which used to connect the two was not and was demolished to make way for a car park.

It was this car park that Indy and I found ourselves in trying to work out if access was possible with so many people around on a busy Saturday!

Luckily our entrance did not draw any attention so we were free to explore. 330095-229899-thumbnail.jpg

The first thing you notice is everywhere there are A6 notices posting statements about Bernard Hugh Robert Harris, these seem to be part of a whole building art display that was held there in 1999. One room is devoted to Mr Harris and his supposed acts against the Post Office; it makes for very 330095-229890-thumbnail.jpginteresting if somewhat strange reading.

The top floor was defiantly mine and Indy’s favourite place with a large hall type room with large windows and a glass ceiling. Probably the creepiest place was the basement with its blue room with very strange paint daubings on it presumably in the name of art!
