Queen Elizabeth’s Children’s Hospital Hackney
Architect: ??
Opened: 1875
Patients: Children
Closed: 1997
Other: Originally The Northeastern Hospital for Children
Originally founded as the Norteastern Hospital for Children and primarily catered for the slum children who in Victorian times who were very susceptible to ill health due to poor living conditions. The hospital originally opened in 1867 at Virginia Road, Bethnal Green, but very soon the needs of the hospital overwhelmed the premises and a new purpose built hospital was constructed in 1875.

The Hospital was absorbed with the Princess Elizabeth of York Hospital for Children, Shadwell in 1942 and renamed the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for Children, in 1948 the hospital was again absorbed this time into the newly formed NHS and a new 3rd Queen Elizabeth’s was opened in Barnstead. Some may remember this as an abandonment from a few years ago with a large white grand piano which is now apartments.
Since it closure in 1997 the interior has remained relatively intact, most due to a large on site security presence and the fact that it had a continued revenue for the NHS as a filming location! Many UK serials have been filmed in this former hospital and we were even lucky enough to find some sugar glass!
