Soviet Military Headquarters Berlin
A former German Army Engineers school before the Second World War, it was turned into a German Army officers club and what is now the German-Russian Museum saw the signing of the unconditional surrender of the Nazis On 8 May 1945, Field Marshall Keitel which effectively ended the war in Europe.
After the war the Russians moved into the buildings and they became to Soviet military Headquarters,
surrounded by a high wall and an electrified metal fence on top!
At the edge of the site is a high bunker, covered in graffiti and tightly sealed although I have since found out that the local council open it up yearly on heritage days. The main complex is large and well looked after, but a lot of the buildings are still accessible. Inside they are pretty much stripped but there were some notable odd things inside. The corridors were very wide and so were the doors most fitting at least 2 people through at once, some rooms had padded doors either inside or out … presumably so that conversations were not overheard. We found a smashed light stamped with CCCP, everything conforms in East German Communist Era!
After learning much about the political system in East Germany and the paranoia of the Stassi you start wondering when walking around, why is that room got a barred door? Why is that one covered in soundproofing? I am sure there are more logical explanations that the ones the first spring to mind …… but it really is a strange place to wander round.
