Springhill
In the highly sought out residential area of Ascot and Windsor stands this almost forgotten huge manor style house which was built in 1886.
Obviously built in great splendour at the time, over the years it fell into great ruin, nothing about it really stands out architecturally but it is more the story that goes along with mine and DocD's visit that makes me include it here.
Having driven past the grounds many times and taking the odd peek through the trees as we drove past in the
car. Having some spare time we decided a further investigation was in order, following the road we soon came to some large and quite impressive gates which were open except for a chain draped over them. Deciding not to disturb them we went through one one the numerous and large holes in the fence and wandered up to the house.
On top of the slight hill we found the house and outbuildings, most of the windows had been removed and black plastic that was supposed to protect the empty windows from the elements were blowing in the wind. This house had obviously been stripped out for restoration at some point in the past. Continuing inside we found
most things stripped completely but damage was everywhere plaster falling as we walked by buckets filled and overflowing on the stairs. In the basement we saw the only sign that something had been added.... there was a sauna door! Making our way back out we saw the garages full of weeds and rubbish and an out building that had partially collapsed. Deciding there was not that much more to see we made our way out past the filled in swimming pool and wondered what had caused the development work to halt........... maybe they had run out of money??
Going back down the drive there was someone at the gate who was asking how we got in, well if you look its quite easy I replied look the gate isn't even locked! We came out from where we had come in and walked into a torrent of abuse from a man who only had a limited grasp of English, we grasped after a while that not only had he called the police several times during our short visit but he threateningly said that he was "looking after" the property for a Princess who currently resided over the road. Looking over the road we saw 4 caravans.......... must have been a very poor princess!
After trying to have a reasonable conversation with the man regarding the civil law of Trespass and him
becoming more and more aggressive, saying that were we the ones who had stolen a vintage car from there 2 weeks ago (which was obviously a lie, no one had driven anything in or out of there in many a year!) and even trying to grab me at one point we decided the best thing was to leave! We never did hear any more about our visit and I have to say its not one that I would recommend others to try!
