The building was once an old coaching Inn called the Seven Thorns; reputedly used by highwaymen but this is more of an old rumour than fact.

The area immediately to the south and on the east side was the site of the old Connaught Military Hospital which was used by the Canadians during WWII and also used as a fever244543-184532-thumbnail.jpg hospital. On the west side, towards Wagoners Wells, was an extensive military camp, during both World Wars.

244543-184534-thumbnail.jpgDue to the heavy military influence in the area the public house developed a reputation for heavy drinking and fighting not really the place where you would take your Granny for Sunday lunch!

Later years it was the supposedly best place to go for anything that might have fallen off the back of the proverbial lorry and more than a few villainous deals were cooked up there.244543-184536-thumbnail.jpg

The name changed to the 'Spaniards Inn', sometime about the 1970s, the nightclub section (Ravens) was opened around 1983/4 it soon became a 244543-184539-thumbnail.jpgplace to go after other pubs had shut due to it's late licence according to an ex local the reputation The Spaniard had was well deserved with fights aplenty no wonder it was called the 'Hell Hole'.

Being directly on a dual carriageway was always a problem and after one accident to may the place was closed in 1993. The owners have applied for planning permission many times but this has always been refused for safety reasons, now scaffolding is in place just to stop the structure falling into the road. The future of The Spaniard seems sure 244543-184542-thumbnail.jpgto be it's demolition as part of a dual carriageway widening scheme.
