Numbers of English In-patients at 31 March 1994
The table below is taken from a discussion in the Houses of Parliment regarding the closure of "Water Tower Hospitals" in England and the amount of patients still residing there.
I have taken this list and tried to determine the fate of these hospitals. The table below now also states the date of closure and the current status.

According to information recieved this list includes mental hospitals and units which are not 'water tower' hospitals although I have still incuded them as it shows how many hospitals catered to the mentally ill.
