Wentworth Bunker
Hidden under the famous golf course in Surrey is Wentworth Bunker, a WWII underground bunker but unlike most I have seen which are shelters from air raids; this was a back up command centre for D Day!! Wentworth had been earmarked by General Sir Alanbrooke, Commander in Chief Home Forces, as his HQ in
the event of an invasion that never in fact came and in due course Wentworth was used as a signals centre by the 21st Army Group in the lead up to D-Day.
The bunker consists of twin segmented cast iron tubes, taken from London Transport stock which becomes VERY apparent when you are in there! , about 100 yards long, separated by a smaller diameter access tunnel, the access tunnel leads to both exits one under Wentworth House, which is now a golf club house and one buried deep in the woods.
The access ramp is completely cemented in at one end and the lack of ventilation in the bunker now that the air vent have been sealed has left the air quite bad, causing many people I know that have been in to suffer shortness of breath! Despite being very stripped as most military remnants are, it is defiantly worth seeing especially for its tube like qualities!!
